Frequently Asked Questions
How are PURE Light and TRUE Light Moissanite gems made?
They are grown by crystalizing silicon and carbon elements in state of the art facilities. Being lab grown, the material is reproducible and sustainable.
What are the benefits of PURE Light and TRUE Light Moissanite gems?
Durability: Lab Created Moissanite is extremely durable. They have superior hardness, toughness and stability that make them suitable for daily wear and have a brilliance that will last forever.
Responsibility: Lab Created Moissanite has a minimal impact on our environment, and support local economies. They are also fairly traded.
Value: Lab Created Moissanite has a lower cost per carat than many other gemstones, and come at less of a premium for larger sizes. These gemstones are particularly good choices for bold designs.
How is a Lab Created Moissanite gemstone measured?
Moissanite is 13% less dense than diamond, meaning that with millimeter size (length and width) being equal, a Moissanite gemstone will be slightly lighter than a diamond of a similar shape. Hence, Moissanite is marketed by millimeter (mm) size to ensure proper fits in traditionally calibrated mountings, though carat weight and an approximate diamond equivalent are also typically noted for each gemstone.
Which color scale is used to grade Lab Created Moissanite?
In general, Colorless or Near Colorless Lab Created Moissanite is graded similarly to the jewelry industry diamond color grading scale, where D is the most colorless, followed by E, F and so on. Lab Created Moissanite faces up as well as colorless and near colorless diamonds. TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite™ is a bright, near colorless white gemstone that is graded as G, H or I in color. PURE Light Lab Created Moissanite™ is an intensely white colorless gem that is graded as D, E or F in color. Colored Moissanite is produced in consistently vibrant colors and is therefore designated by overall hue, without subgrades for tone or saturation.
Do Lab Created Moissanite gemstones have inclusions?
Lab Created Moissanite is produced by crystalizing organic elements in a controlled environment that mimics nature. Tiny, needle-like inclusions invariably develop during the growing process but only those that are at least equivalent to the GIA VS grade for diamonds are made available for distribution. These inclusions can only been seen under magnification and do not impact Moissanite’s appearance or optical properties.
How is Lab Created Moissanite cut?
PURE Light and TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite™ are produced as large pieces of rough material which are then cut to specific gem sizes and hand-faceted by master gem cutters to maximize brilliance and fire. The angles and proportions are precisely calculated to be ideal for the refractive index of Moissanite. Each gem is individually polished to produce a reflective luster that is equal to diamond.
How durable is Moissanite?
Moissanite is superbly durable. Its ability to resist scratching and abrasion measures 9.5 on the Mohs harness scale – making it a close second only to diamond, and more than twice the hardness of cubic zirconia (CZs). Moissanite’s crystalline structure is held together with strong covalent bonding similar to diamonds but it won’t cleave in a direction of structural weakness the way diamonds can. That means Moissanite’s toughness, or ability to resist breaking or chipping, outranks diamond. Moissanite is color-stable and virtually impervious to the extreme heat, temperature variations and chemical solutions used during jewelry manufacturing processes and repair or modification work. Overall, Moissanite is an excellent choice for everyday wear.
Does more than one company manufacture Moissanite?
Yes, more than one company is manufacturing and reselling Lab Created Moissanite for the jewelry industry. The United States patent that covered Moissanite expired in August, 2015.
Is Moissanite a man-made or lab grown diamond?
No, Moissanite is not a man-made or a lab grown diamond. Diamond is pure carbon whereas Moissanite is a compound of silicon carbide. Naturally occurring Moissanite is extremely rare and found in particles too small for jewelry. Lab Created Moissanite is chemically and structurally identical to naturally occurring Moissanite. It is made in state-of-the-art laboratories that mimic the extreme heat and pressure used to produce naturally occurring Moissanite.
How do industry professionals identify Lab Created Moissanite?
Jewelers and appraisers use electronic testers specifically designed to distinguish Moissanite. They may also use a jewelers loupe to check for the facet-doubling effect caused by birefringence (when light is doubly-refracted). Gemologists may also test for specific refractive and gravity indices. PURE Light and TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite™ gems are sold with certificates of authenticity and are inscribed on the girdle of the gemstone for easy identification.
What cuts and sizes of PURE Light and TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite™ are available?
PURE Light and TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite™ are available in a wide variety of cuts, shapes and sizes. For a full listing of cuts, shapes and sizes available, please refer to our Cut, Size and Grade Index.
How do I care for my Lab Created Moissanite?
PURE Light and TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite™ are well suited for everyday wear. These gemstones may be cleaned using commercially available jewelry cleaners or dishwashing soap, rinsed with warm water, and dried with a soft cloth. While PURE Light and TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite are rated Excellent on a toughness scale, it is advised to avoid situations that involve sharp, harsh blows to the jewelry that may fracture or chip the gemstone. Contact with rough surfaces or abrasive materials that may scratch the gemstone should be avoided.
Why should I register my PURE Light or TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite™?
Registering your PURE Light or TRUE Light Lab Created Moissanite™ is the first step in protecting your investment. In the event that you need to exercise the warranty on your gemstone, you must first have registered your gemstone.
What is the difference between a diamond and a Lab Created Moissanite?
Diamonds and Lab Created Moissanite are both crystalline structures that can be cut into beautiful, brilliant gemstones. Diamond occurs naturally and is mined from the earth. Lab Created Moissanite is grown in a laboratory. Both materials are extremely hard and, because of their hardness, can be polished to the finest of lusters. Diamond contains natural fractures, which reduces its ability to withstand hard impacts and may result in chips or overall breakage. Lab Created Moissanite does not contain natural fractures and is more averse to hard impacts. Both gemstones are known for their “brilliance” and “fire,” with Lab Created Moissanite being slightly more brilliant (10%) and having 2.36 times more fire than diamond. In terms of weight, diamond is slightly heavier than Lab Created Moissanite for a similarly sized gemstone. In terms of cost, diamond is about X times more expensive than a similarly sized Lab Created Moisanite. The chart below shows the difference between the properties of Lab Created Moissanite and Diamond:
